Fix it yourself, step by step
Every answer here ends in something you can do alone. Your keys never leave your device, so nobody else can do these steps for you.
Launching soon. These guides describe the app, which opens on Ethereum after the audits. Read them now so you know your way out before you ever need it.
My wallet will not connect, or is on the wrong network
- Unlock your wallet and pick the account you want to use.
- Switch it to Ethereum mainnet when the app asks. Wintergate only signs for Ethereum, so nothing can go to the wrong chain.
- Extensions that block scripts can hide the wallet: allow this site, or try a private window with only your wallet enabled.
- On a phone, open the site inside your wallet app's browser.
My action has been waiting a long time
- A protected action normally takes 8 to 15 minutes: the app waits for Ethereum to make the record final before it signs. Keep the tab open; you can also close it and come back, the app picks up where it was.
- If gas is very busy, the first transaction may wait for a block. It goes through a private relay by default; the app can re-send the identical transaction.
- Every action has a two-hour deadline. If it passes, nothing moved, nothing is lost but one one-time key, and you can simply try again.
It says my protection credit is too low
- Each protected action pays its WINTER fee from your vault's protection credit.
- Use "Add protection credit" in the app: it swaps a little ETH to WINTER straight into your vault.
- An action that failed for lack of credit is not lost: after the top-up the app sends the same signature again.
- Exits never need credit.
The fee is higher than I expected
The fee is a fixed number of WINTER: 1,000 WINTER to create a vault and 50 WINTER per protected action. It never changes in WINTER, but what it costs in ETH or dollars moves with the WINTER market price, up or down. Every action carries the most you agreed to pay; if the fee is above that, nothing is charged and nothing moves. Gas is separate and goes to Ethereum, and on busy days it can be the larger part.
New phone, new computer, or a second device
- Open the app on the new device and restore from your kit file and its passphrase, or from your master seed.
- The app reads your vault on Ethereum to learn which one-time keys are used. No backup has to be up to date.
- Two devices can use one vault: if both try at once, one waits and takes the next key. Nothing unsafe happens.
I lost my seed, my device or my recovery key
- Lost the device, have the kit and its passphrase, or the master seed: restore on a new device and carry on.
- Lost the kit, its passphrase and the master seed, but have the recovery key: start a recovery on the exit page. After 30 days the vault moves to new keys.
- Lost the recovery key only: nothing is at risk. Set a new recovery key from the app while you still have your kit or master seed.
- Lost the kit, the master seed and the recovery key: nobody can move the vault, ever. That is the other side of keys only you hold.
Someone started a recovery on my vault
If it was not you, cancel it from the app or the exit page with your keys, before its 30 days are up. Cancelling never costs a WINTER fee. Then set a new recovery key: whoever started it has your old one.
I want to leave, or the website is down
Use the exit page, which talks to Ethereum directly. Evacuate sends everything to the exit address you chose, fee-free. If normal actions are impossible for you, start the escape: seven days later the vault no longer needs the per-action record. You can save the exit page and run it from your own computer.
The canary fired. What now?
Your vault already needs its hash key on every move, so it stays protected. Ordinary wallets are now at risk: move anything you still hold outside a vault, and keep your kit and master seed safe.
What do you know about me?
Nothing. There are no accounts, cookies, analytics or forms, and the exposure check sends the address you type only to a public Ethereum endpoint, straight from your browser. See privacy.

Still stuck?
There is no support desk: Wintergate is a community protocol with no owner and no inbox. Your funds never depend on this website; exits and recovery work without it. If a security issue is ever found, it is on the security notices page. Found one yourself? Read how to disclose it.
